BALLOT TITLE To: Wenonah Blanchette, City Recorder, City of Gaston From: Ruben Cleaveland, City Attorney Re: Filing of Ballot Title Date: July 17, 2020 Dear Ms. Blanchette, PLEASE TAKE NOTICE, the following Ballot Title for referral of A RESOLUTION SUBMITTING TO THE ELECTORS OF THE CITY OF GASTON A MEASURE PROPOSING A NEW CITY CHARTER, ADOPTING A BALLOT TITLE, AND AUTHORIZING RELATED MATTERS, as passed by the City Council as Resolution Number 20-009 is filed for publication: Caption: Adopts a new charter for Gaston municipal government Question: Shall the City of Gaston adopt a new charter to replace its current municipal charter? Summary: If adopted, this measure would provide a new charter for the City of Gaston. The current charter was approved by the voters in 1974 and took effect in 1975. There have been many changes to state law since the enactment of the current charter and some of the provisions of the current charter are not consistent with state law. The proposed new charter specifies a general grant of powers consistent with state law. The new charter will retain four year terms for the mayor and members of the city council and the positions will continue to be elected at large by Gaston voters. The current mayor and council members would remain in their positions and continue to serve the term for which they were elected. This means that council terms would remain staggered as they are under the current charter. Complete copies of the proposed charter showing all changes are available by contacting City Hall or online at: www.cityofgaston.com. Publish July 29, 2020 NT172270
